Ottawa Dog Show 2016

The Ottawa Dog Show was something I really looked forward to and it was not that far. It looked promising and exciting. Here were my first impressions;

Even with the “help” of the gps, I had some trouble looking for it. Apparently, I drove past it….twice. It was in a rural area and there were no signs indicating that THE Ottawa Dog Show was taking place.

It was 38 degrees celsius and the event was taking place OUTSIDE. I was baffled and obviously, very hot and dizzy. There was a tent to stand under but no good pictures could be taken from there. The majority of the audience were seniors. Nothing wrong with seniors but how can there be not ONE kid that shows up?

Also, they’re were not enough seats for everyone so we had to play musical chairs. The chairs were old and on the verge of collapse so everyone made sure to sit at the edge.

Here is the Bouvier Des Flandres and he was much bigger than I expected.

This Corgi loved the camera!

Surprisingly calm Shetland.

“Flossed and brushed every morning, sir.”

I was born ready!  (Just give me one more treat)

I was very disappointed but not surprised at the lack of professionalism. They couldn’t even provide a proper table for the smaller breeds to stand on. It was a plastic, folding one and they just tossed an old rag on it as a mat.

“How long?”

This may sound weird but the judge looked and walked very drunkly. Perhaps it was the heat?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Hey! I see another one coming in. We definitely have competition. Are you looking?           “I can’t, she’s pulling my face away.”
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Ahh! Spotted an admirer. Wait. Done.”
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
The smooth Collie was very excited. This was a luck shot.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Hold still.

Preparing the contestants.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“Keep your eye on the treat.”

The German Shepherds were the most disobedient. The handlers couldn’t catch up with them and the red dressed lady lost her shoes on one occasion. They were very hyperactive.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Almost all the dogs were very distracted and often went off-course.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
This lady had to hold the tent pole when making the final turn or else the shepherd would have dragged her through the fields!
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
But she survived and that’s the most important.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
This handler impatiently posed for a picture before taking off.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
The dogs were often cooled with a wet towel due to the extreme hot weather.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
It was a miracle that none of the handlers got injured.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Tugging on the leash out of frustration was also seen.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Beautiful Dobermann. I was shocked by how small he was as I’m used to the European version.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
And the turn.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Every handler or owner had a number stuck to their upper arm, like the lady on the right. The paper was held with a RUBBER BAND and it continuously fell off which confused everyone.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
You gotta just love this breed.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
This Poodle lady really worked hard.

Posing with a Bull Mastiff.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Most of these dogs seemed unreliable and not very social so I was worrying about someone getting injured most of the time. People just pet other dogs with no permission and it’s simply unacceptable.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Smiling for the camera.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
I’m having a so-so hair day.

“It’s my turn already?”
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
How this dog made it through the weather was should be considered abusive.

“I’ll do my best.”
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
This Mastiff was snorting and had difficulty breathing  with the humidity.

I’m getting an Australian or Border Collie puppy by the end of the year so I’m very excited.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
“I can easily beat them.”
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
This Great Dane was not at all a “gentle giant”. He kicked tables and bumped into people with joy!

I thought that I would strike up a conversation here and there but no one spoke to anyone new. There was nobody that liked to engage with strangers.

Ottawa has the money and brains to make a good dog show but they didn’t and once again, the Canadians put up with it.
